VASCO: Flag Officer Commanding Goa Area (FOGA) Rear Admiral Ajay Theophilus installed a replica of defence ship INS Mormugao here on Wednesday.

Vasco MLA Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar, Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Girish Borker, ward councillor Shami Salkar, among others, were present on the occasion.

Later speaking to mediapersons, Rear Admiral Ajay Theophilus said the replica of the ship was made by Mazgaon Dock in Mumbai.

"The INS Mormugao was actually commissioned in the Indian Navy and we are very proud to give this replica to an area near Mormugao Port and a part of the Mormugao Taluka. We are happy that it will be well looked after as the people are very proud of Mormugao harbour which has a lot of memories attached to it," he said.

Salkar said with the installation of the replica, the bond with the Indian Navy is growing stronger. "Navy shares a great connection with Vasco. When the Navy mentioned that they had a replica of INS Mormugao ship and they were looking for a place to install it. I immediately suggested the name of Vasco as it is part of Mormugao Taluka," he said.

"We even spoke to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and requested him that the replica of the ship be installed in Vasco. This is a proud moment for us because the name of our port and the taluka is associated with a defence ship," Salkar said.

The Vasco MLA further said the replica of the ship installed in Vasco will definitely increase the beauty of the Vasco town and also develop a national spirit in the minds of the people.
