PANJIM: As the year comes to en end, the Traffic and Transport Departments have heaved a sigh of relief as there is a significant drop in deaths from road accidents. The total number of accidents has also shown a decline, although figures for Nov and Dec are still being compiled.

Data released by Transport Department indicates that 3,163 accidents were reported from January to October 2017 while the corresponding period this year recorded 3,054 accidents, a drop of 109 accidents. Similarly, accidents dropped from 255 in 2017 to 187 this year in October.

Transport Department has attributed the drop in fatalities and accidents to strict enforcement of traffic laws and penalisation of violators.

The least, 248 accidents, were recorded in August 2018 while the highest, 350, were reported in February 2018. Data further reveals that the first three months of the year recorded maximum deaths due to road accidents with 26, 27 and 28 persons losing their lives in January, February and March respectively. The least, 14 deaths, was reported in each month of May, June, August and October.

While the compilation of accidents and deaths for November and December 2018 will be released in January 2019, the corresponding months for the year 2017 recorded 342 and 412 accidents respectively and a total 60 deaths. The 2017 calendar year saw 3,917 accidents and 315 deaths.
