VEREM: Terming it as a historic day for India, newly appointed Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday flagged-off the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini (INSV Tarini) with an all-women crew from INS Mandovi boat pool at Verem.

This is the first Indian circumnavigation of the globe by an all-women crew.

“This is not an occasion which can happen once in five years or once in 10 years, it is a historic day for India. Historic day which will be marked in navigation history and globally I think our women standout for doing something which most naval teams in the world haven’t even thought of," said Sitharaman while addressing the gathering in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Chief of Naval Staff Sunil Lamba.

“It is an opportunity that no one can easily get to be amongst these great inspired and motivated women who will take this challenge. I begin with great sense of happiness, honour and pleasure to be here and for the initiative I appreciate the Navy. I appreciate all the mentors who have been instrumental in inspiring, motivating and training these fascinating women. There is nothing more that I can say at this time other than being absolutely honoured and touched to be here,” said Sitharaman. She further said the motivation amongst these women is also high and she's sure that they will be able to tackle all the challenges during their voyage.

“Women are coming ahead to join the Forces due to their talent, skill and resolve. There is no need of providing alternate push for the women to join Forces but whenever they require help, we are ready to provide it,” the Defence Minister added.

Meanwhile, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sunil Lamba, expressed satisfaction at continuation of the legacy of Indian Navy’s Ocean sailing expeditions which commenced in 1988 with expedition ‘Samudra’. This was followed by first solo circumnavigation by Captain Dilip Donde (Retd) and non-stop  circumnavigation of the globe by CDR Abhilash Tomy resulting in India joining a select group of nine nations which have achieved such feats.

“The circumnavigation is planned in about 165 days at sea. During this voyage, Tarini will call at the port of Fremantle (Australia), Lyttelton (New Zealand), Port Stanley (Falklands) and Cape Town (South Africa). Indian navy has a rich tradition of encouraging adventure as a means to nurture leadership quality. Successful completion of three pole expedition by Navy, including North Pole, South Pole and Mount Everest is constant example of such endeavours,” Lamba added.

INSV Tarini is a 55-foot sailing vessel, which has been built indigenously, and was inducted into the Indian Navy early this year, thus showcasing the ‘Make in India’ initiative on the World forum. INSV Tarini is being skippered by Lt. Commander Vartika Joshi, and the crew comprises Lt. Commanders Pratibha Jamwal, P Swathi, and Lieutenants S Vijaya Devi, B Aishwarya and Payal Gupta.

However, during the voyage, the crew would monitor and report marine pollution on the high seas, as also interact extensively with local PIOs during various port halts to promote ocean sailing the crew would also collate and update Meteorological/ Ocean/ Wave data on a regular basis for accurate weather forecast by India Meteorological Department (IMD) and subsequent analysis by research and development organisations.

VEREM: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said, "Former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar is an inspiring political mentor for me, his presence is valuable. Just eight days after my swearing in as raksha mantri, for me to come and flag off an all-women crew which will circumnavigate the globe is something which I cannot describe in words.” Sitharaman was addressing a gathering in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Chief of Naval Staff Sunil Lanba.
“It is great pleasure and it is an opportunity which no one can easily get. I am indeed honoured and it is a great pleasure” she said.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday wished success to an all-woman team of the Indian Navy as it embarked on circumnavigation of the globe, a first of its kind from India.
