PANJIM: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested mining trader Imran Khan for cheating the State of crores of rupees through illegal extraction of ore. The sleuths also suspect a nexus between the alleged accused and an influential politician from Salcette.

According to details, Khan allegedly availed Environmental Clearance in his name whereas Goa State Pollution Control Board found it to be fabricated and bogus. It had then suspended mining in TC no 65/51 belonging to Amalia Figeredo.

“Khan extracted iron ore amounting to crores of rupees for the period 2007-2012 years under the blessings and acting as an proxy to influential politician from Salcette,” said SP Kartik Kashyap.

The officer further revealed that the accused also availed power of attorney to act in TC 65/51 from its legal heirs before the State government decided to transfer the lease in the name of the legal heir.

In 2009 the government ensured that the lease transfer approval is given by the mines minister on noting file in the name of legal heirs who had given power of attorney to Khan. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat was then holding the Mines portfolio.

“Khan allegedly acted as proxy to the then mines minister Kamat and the investigation with this respect is also underway,” the officer said.

The legal heirs, being aged, accused that Khan and influential politician took advantage of the situation and extracted iron ore amounting to crores of rupees.

The accused moved for bail which was later heard at around 9pm on Tuesday.

He was not granted bail and matter will be taken up by Wednesday.
