PANJIM: Labour Department will install sanitary napkin dispensing units in industrial estates and schools from April for industrial workers and children studying in the schools.

Labour Minister Rohan Khaunte said the scheme was approved by the welfare board on Thursday and would be implemented by April.

The Minister said that workers in the organised sectors get facilities but those in the unorganised do not. He said the government’s aim is to provide for every unorganised industrial female worker. The draft of the scheme also mentions providing financial assistance of Rs 2000 per woman annually.

The draft states that 88 percent women resort to alternatives like un-sanitized cloth and the biggest barrier in suing a sanitary napkin is affordability.

The Minister said that Goa Welfare Board Office and Board of Construction Worker offices will start in South Goa to restructure staff and provide better service in the district. The Board has approved to appoint staff, he added.

He said that a women’s hostel will be opened in an industrial estate, either Verna or Kundaim, wherever government land is available.

“Women will have a hostel with facilities with skill up gradation so that culture of 24/7 will come and issues will be resolve who wants to work in pharmaceutical companies and others,” Khaunte said.
