Sanjivani Sugar Factory transferred from  Registrar  of Cooperative Societies to Agri Dept

Panjim: The State Cabinet on Wednesday resolved to transfer the Sanjivani Sugar Factory from the Registrar of Cooperative Societies, to the Agriculture Department for its smooth functioning.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that the cabinet has approved an amendment to the Business of the Government of Goa (Allocation) Rules, 1987, thereby transferring the factory from Cooperative Societies to the Agriculture department.

The Chief Minister had on Tuesday assured the sugarcane farmers that the State’s sole sugar factory will not be shut and that the government will soon be exploring various options to make the factory operational.

The factory, which has incurred heavy losses, has been non-operational for the last two seasons.

Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar had said that the government will explore the option of running the industry on public private partnership (PPP), if required.

“Sanjivani" Co-op Sugar Factory is an important establishment of the Goa Government with the livelihood of several farmers associated with it. Today, we have decided to bring "Sanjivani" under the administration of the Agriculture Department to broaden its scope and to extend enhanced support to farmers,” said Sawant via social media. 

In yet another decision, the Cabinet has appointed a consultant through its PPP Cell, to fast track the long-pending Convention Centre project at Dona Paula.

Sawant added that the consultant is appointed in a bid to fast track the project.
