MARGAO: Residents of Sarzora village remain steadfast in their opposition to the proposed plans by Goa’s Water Resources Department (WRD) to divert water from Sarzora Lake to Mormugao. This controversy intensified following a visit by WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar and other officials to the lake, where the Minister discussed the possibility of tapping raw water from local water bodies, including Davorlim and Sarzora lakes and River Kushavati, to meet future water requirements.

Sarzora Panch member Sabita Mascarenhas expressed concern that neither the panchayat nor the villagers were consulted about this plan, nor were they informed about the Minister’s visit.

To date, they have not received clear communication from the authorities regarding their intentions for the lake, she said.

The villagers are resolute in their demand to preserve the lake for future generations, fearing that diverting its water could lead to a water crisis in the area.

Mascarenhas emphasised the historical significance of the lake, which has served the village’s needs for generations. She questioned why the government is considering diverting a vital water source that is essential for the well-being of the community.

Local farmers echoed these sentiments, expressing frustration that the government is discussing diverting the very water they depend on. Complaints have also arisen regarding the lack of water from the WRD canal.

Residents pointed out that the Goa government recently declared Sarzora Lake as a wetland. Signage installed by the State Wetland Authority near the lake highlights its importance for agriculture and biodiversity in the area.

In light of these concerns, residents have called on the government to reconsider its plan and explore alternative solutions to address water requirements in the Mormugao region without compromising the vital resources of Sarzora Lake.
