PONDA: The issue of scrapyards and garbage sparked off a  debate at the Kavlem gram sabha with members demanding an end to the nuisance in their village.

The gram sabha members unanimously resolved to ban discriminatory practice against widows too.

The meeting chaired by sarpanch Manuja Naik evoked

demands with villagers seeking action against hazardous scrapyards which were both a threat and nuisance in the locality.

The Sarpanch stated that the panchayat had issued  demolition orders to the scrapyards but four owners challenged the order in Court.

Repling to querries on garbage, the sarpanch stated that village waste was presently being treated at the Saligao Waste Treatment Plant and added that the Kavlem Panchayat along with two other panchayats were trying to identify a common site to set up a garbage  treatment plant.

Gram sabha member Kishan Naik stated the playground

was used by people for antisocial activities while others wanted the panchayat to initiate action against an alleged illegal bar operating at Paunwadda to which the sarpanch said that she would look into the matter.
