Security beefed up at GMC, COVID care centres

PANJIM: Security in and around the Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim and other COVID-19 care centres in the State has been beefed up following incidents of abusing doctors on duty.

The Goa Association of Residents Doctors (GARD) had appealed to the government to enhance the security in the GMC and other COVID care centres after relatives of patients abused them and also damaged the hospital property last month.

There were incidents of doctors and other medical staff being abused by the relatives of COVID-19 patients after the latter could not get an ICU bed in the hospital.

Now, police personnel have been deployed outside the hospital and also near the wards round-the-clock even as some relatives on Monday attempted to abuse GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar for not getting an ICU bed for their kin.

Additional security has also been provided to the GMC Dean.

Dr Bandekar said that doctors and nurses are working hard to save the lives of the patients and it was unfortunate that the relatives were abusing and attacking the doctors following the death of their dear ones.
