MARGAO: Farmers of Nuvem have complained that the sewage contamination of their lakes is not only affecting their fields but also polluting the water body and killing the fish and biodiversity of the area.
With work of laying the sewerage line under way in neighbouring Fatorda, the farmers said that for the last four years, the issue of sewage contamination of their lakes has remained unresolved despite multiple assurances from the government that this issue would be rectified.
Locals further recalled how they used to bathe in this water and carry out small fishing activities in those waters too but they lamented how all that has stopped now due to the high pollution levels of the Nuvem lakes.
They appealed to the authorities to look into this issue and find the spots from where sewerage is flowing into the lakes and stop that and then to take measures to clean the lakes too.
It may be recalled that the farmers had earlier reminded Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant of sewage flowing into the Bhokti Khandi lake and reminded him of his promise to resolve the issue by the end of May this year.
