SALIGAO: Shraddha Borkar was elected as the new sarpanch of Saligao panchayat on Wednesday. The said post was vacant after a no-confidence motion was passed against the former sarpanch, Lafira Gomes by five members in the nine-member panchayat body on April 30.

Those who voted for Bokar are Kalpana Oraskar, Deepak Rane, Dayanand Mandrekar, Pandurang Harmalkar and Borkar. The four members from the opposition were conspicuously absent.

The Saligao MLA, Jayesh Salgaonkar also made his presence felt at the elections and congratulated the sarpanch and the winning panel.

“There are many vigilant groups in the village and one of the groups has highlighted (alleged) illegal activities being carried out in the fields and hills. I request the sarpanch to take action towards the same,” said Salgaonkar.

The meeting was presided over by Manohar Parwar and assisted by the Panchayat Secretary, Clifton Azavedo.

The newly elected Sarpanch Borkar, said that her priority will be to solve the problems of garbage and electricity fluctuations faced by the village.
