Cuncolkars suffer in CMC’s toppling games

No major development has taken place in Cuncolim for the last 17 months because the elected councilors are busy fighting among themselves

In the last 17 months since the New Council took over, Cuncolim has neither seen any major development nor have Cuncolkars been getting good response from the Cuncolim Municipal Council.

Infighting among the councilors, instability in the council and toppling games have been on the councilors agenda, leaving Cuncolim bereft of any development work.

The municipal elections brought five BJP-supported councillors and seven from the Joaquim Alemao supported group. Of these, fifty per cent were women councillors which Cuncolkars hoped would see less corruption, but it only remained their dream.

In the last six months, a no-confidence motion was moved three times against the Chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas and one against VC Mario Morais. Mascarenhas survived twice while Mario Morais also succeeded in saving his chair. The no confidence motion has become the laughing stock of Cunkolkars.

Just before the Assembly elections, seven councilors served a no-confidence motion against Lavita. Mario and Shashank Dessai were instrumental in serving the notice. However, the next day both Mario and Shashank took a big turn alleging that the BJP has pressurized them and both voted against the motion.

Soon after the polls, Morais and Dessai moved the no-confidence once again against Lavita. However, to their surprise the BJP councilors backed the chairperson and Lavita retained her seat.
