Demand to open ‘ready, yet in limbo’ Quepem Hospital

Neither the Health Minister Vishwajit Rane nor the Health Director are concerned about the hospital, which is ready for inauguration for the past six years, but remains to be in limbo.

Neither the Health Minister Vishwajit Rane nor the Health Director are concerned about the hospital, which is ready for inauguration for the past six years, but remains to be in limbo.

The newly-constructed 24-bed Primary Health Centre eagerly awaits patient, but the government does not seem to be bothered about the health of Quepemkars.

The leader of opposition and Quepem MLA Chandrakant Kavlekar took the initiative to construct this hospital at Quepem, as for several years Quepemkars have been demanding a primary health centre. Till then there was a just government-run centre for Quepem town and surrounding areas. Recently after local demand, the Health Department started a four-bed Health Centre with only one doctor on service.

In fact, the plan was to upgrade the status of Quepem Health Centre into Primary Health Centre or Community Health Centre. During the Congress regime Kavlekar for sanctioned a 24-bed hospital project for Quepem.

The building was completed six years ago and since then it has been  lying unutilised.

Many recommendations and demands were made but were of no use, as the Health Department and BJP government stalled the inauguration of the hospital.

Locals allege that the BJP government was purposely not starting the 24- bed hospital, claiming that the government did not want to give credit of the hospital to Kavlekar and therefore had delayed the inauguration of this hospital constructed at the cost of Rs 15 crore, which is lying unused for the past six years.

The Health Minister and Chief Minister had assured Quepemkars in the Assembly that the hospital would be started in six months.

In fact, the Chairperson of Quepem Municipal Council Rahul Pereira had given a one-month ultimatum to the government to start the Hospital. Pereira told Herald that he would initiate a massive agitation against the government, if the hospital project was not in operation January 3, 2018.

In absence of a good government hospital Quepem patients are forced to go to Margao or Ponda. Quepem town, along with the Ambaulim Panchayat, Sheldem Panchayat, Assolda Panchayat and Paroda Panchayat would benefit with the opening of this hospital, the former Chairperson Dayesh Naik said.

Speaking to Herald the Leader of Opposition told Herald that he does not want any name and fame out of the project and requested the government to provide good health facility to people of Quepem.
