MPT hopes that the remaining portion of NH17 B project from Varunapuri to berth No.9 will be completed six months before schedule

The much awaited work of the balance portion of the four-lane highway project (NH17B) connecting Mormugao Port Trust from Varunapuri Mangor-Hill junction to the berth No.9 of MPT has begun in a full swing.

It may be recalled that the project work was halted for about 17-18 years after the four-lane highway project was planned from Verna junction to the Mormugao Harbour in the year 1998-99. The completion of the balance portion of the four-lane highway project would give a boost to the dying economy of the port town. It could even be one of the most generous projects which would enhance the economy of the state, thereby adding laurels to the industrial development.

“Most importantly, the four-lane highway project would divert the heavy vehicular traffic from the city roads, helping to minimise the accidents which are on alarming rate. It has been observed that over 800 heavy vehicles including trucks, tankers, trailers and others ply from the city roads on daily basis, creating sound and air pollution, besides the traffic congestion in the city. Thus the diversion of the heavy vehicular traffic would help to reduce the pollution and even make the port city of Vasco free from accidents,” said MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik.

Considering the importance of the completion of this crucial project, Herald investigation team met MPT as well as the officials of Gammon India Pvt Ltd. It was informed by officials of Gammon India Pvt Ltd, as well as Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) that the work has been going ahead of schedule and on a war footing. The confidence level of both these agencies is high and they now claim that the work would be completed at least six months ahead of schedule.

“Though the deadline date for completion is of October 2018, however as per the Contractors report the four-lane highway road from Varunapuri to MPT would be completed by March 2018 and all heavy vehicular traffic from Verna to MPT would then start using the said road. Also we have been reviewing the work on weekly basis with our staff monitoring the work closely. We have been providing all help to the contractor to ensure that the project gets completed as early as possible,” MPT Chairman I Jeyakumar said.

As per the officials of Gammon India Pvt Ltd, the work on the balance portion of the four-lane highway NH17B from Varunapuri Mangor-Hill to berth No.9 of MPT has been divided into four phases.

Ironically during the last four to five years, the incomplete stretch of the four-lane highway near Varunapuri Mangor-Hill junction had become a parking hub after the earlier contractor abandoned the work following a leakage. One oil supplying pipeline at Sancoale, developed a leak, resulting into a major naphtha fire tragedy killing about six people.

Thus to avoid any confusion the contractors have taken a special care of the underground multi-purpose petroleum pipeline of the Zuari Indian Oil Tanking Ltd (ZIOTL) which was once punctured while carrying an excavation work. “Though we wanted to complete the work from Varunapuri to Gandhinagar earlier the same got little delayed due to rains but still we have been working ahead of schedule given by the PWD,” said an official.
