Hold meeting to rationalise why the water body should be protected

PANJIM: The St Cruz residents raised their pitch to save Bondvol Lake from being lost to “unplanned development and land sharks” by holding a special meeting on Sunday evening near the church.

The residents attended the meeting in a large numbers and discussed the reasons why this important water body should be protected from the land sharks.

Addressing the gathering, researcher and planner Elsa Fernandes informed that the lake is not just a water body but is an eco-system because of which we can breathe fresh air. She said that the lake cannot be measured in any value as it is priceless.

Fernandes said that the lake should be protected as it is an important part of the cultural landscape of the village. “Our future generations will question us what kind of landscape we have kept for them, if we destroy such an important lake,” she said.

She claimed that the Regional Plan has allowed development at just 50 metres away from the lake which, she said, is fatal for this water body.

Activist Arthur D’Souza went through the old files and replies obtained under Right to Information Act to explain how some political-minded people have been trying to destroy this water body which was declared as public utility project way back in 1908 by the Portuguese government.

He said that his fight to save the lake has earned him lot of enemies but would continue the tirade against the land sharks.

Olavio Fernandes said that the lake should be protected at any cost and for that all the villagers should join hands for a common cause.

Another local demanded that they need to intensify their protest to save the lake which is of ecological importance.
