State govt approaches embassy in Tehran to trace Goan seafarer

PANJIM: The Goa government has approached Indian Embassy in Tehran, Iran, seeking details about its citizen, who is amongst 23 seafarers stranded aboard a ship that is seized by the Iranians.

Goa Director of NRI Affairs Anthony D’Costa, on Friday, communicated to OD Tyagi, Head of Chancery, Embassy of India at Tehran, Iran seeking report on the well being of one Govind Suresh Naik who is stranded on the vessel “Stena Impero” which has been seized by Iran on July 19.

“It has been brought to the notice of the State Government that a Goan named Govind Suresh Naik holding Certificate of Competency No. 95Z-20856 as Marine Engineer Officer Class IV is on board the vessel "Stena Impero" which has been seized by Iran,” D’Souza has said in the communication to Indian Embassy at Iran.

Goa NRI Commissioner Narendra Sawaikar had instructed the director to communicate with the authorities in Iran. “It has been learnt from media reports that on ‘Stena Impero’ there are 23 seafarers on board and that there have been no reported injuries and the crew members are in good health,” the letter, copy of which is with PTI, reads.

“As two weeks have passed, this office would be obliged if a report on the well-being of Naik is provided to this office for appraising the Government. The assistance and efforts of the Embassy of India, Tehran in this regard are highly appreciated,” he said.
