MARGAO: The third Covid wave wrecked havoc in the month of January 2022. There were a total of 171 deaths in this month alone, which is a huge jump compared to the number of deaths that were being reported in the final months of the year 2021. The cumulative total of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic is now at 3,693.

In the 31 days of January, there were a total of 58,045 cases reported. This is the second highest tally of Covid cases since the start of the pandemic. The highest was in the month of May 2021 - 64,594 cases, during the peak of the second wave. The previous month, April 2021 had seen 33,013 cases.

As per the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), the third wave began on December 28, 2021.  The highest number of deaths in a single day during the third wave was 20, which was reported January 28.  Similarly, the highest number of cases in a single day was 3,936, which was 

reported on January 19. Goa’s highest number of active cases in the third wave was also reported on January 19, when it was 23,807 active cases. Finally, the highest daily positivity rate was reported on January 18, when it was 45.79%.

It is to be noted that a total number of 50,149 people recovered from Covid in the month of January.  

Incidentally, the number of cases on Monday, January 31 dropped to 500 cases, while the daily positivity rate also dropped down to 18.8%. However, the number of deaths in a single day continued to remain high with 11 being reported on Monday. 

A total of 33 new patients were hospitalised, 11 other patients were discharged from various hospitals whereas another 467 persons were placed under home isolation during the last 24 hours. 2659 persons sent their samples for testing during the same period. While 1387 persons were reported to have recovered from Covid, the total number of active cases has come down to 8760 cases.
