500-odd Kadamba buses, including inter-state buses roped-in to ensure that passengers were not put to any inconvenience

PANJIM: Public transport and banking operations were partially affected in the State as various workers’ unions joined the two-day nationwide strike that concluded on Wednesday.

An obvious impact of the strike was seen in Panjim, Mapusa and Ponda as public transport remained off the road. However, 500-odd Kadamba buses, including inter-state buses were roped-in to ensure that passengers dependent on public transport were not put to any inconvenience.

Transport Department said the impact was not huge as KTC buses and Goa Miles taxis were operational. “By and large we were successful in our alternative arrangement. Normal life was not affected. There was also less pressure on the transport service as some employees in private sector joined the strike and few others travel by their own vehicle,” Transport Director Nikhil Desai said.

With KTC buses replacing private buses, several passengers said the crowd was huge particularly in buses to major towns. “I had to wait for a third KTC as people were just pushing each other to get into the bus,” Anaya D’Sa, an intern with a reputed corporate firm, who has been traveling by bus from Panjim to Mapusa and back, said.

Goa Police had deployed armed personnel at several locations to ensure law and order is maintained. In certain places like Divar possible untoward incidents were thwarted. “We had sent the police force and the magistrate to ensure people are safe,” a senior officer said.

Some banks extended their support to the strike while few others that remained open did not transact any business.
