CUNCOLIM: In a last minute dramatic move, Succorina Coutinho, who had resigned from the chairperson’s post just 15 days back, was re-elected as the chairperson of Cuncolim Municipal Council with the backing of BJP supported councillors, on Friday. 

The post was vacant due to the resignation of former chairperson Succorina, who had resigned due to pressure from one councillor to make way for Polita Carneiro. Polita Carneiro and Succorina Coutinho had filed nominations for the post of chairperson. Eight councillors voted in support of Succorina while three in support of Polita. One councillor remained absent from the election.

The Cuncolim Municipal Council’s chairperson post is reserved for the woman. Ruling group of councillors had made an arrangement among themselves to share the post. According to the verbal agreement, the chairperson’s post was supposed to go for Polita. 

Suddenly, the political equations took U-turn and the ruling group witnessed a split and decided not to elect Polita. The ruling councillors along with opposition councillors came together and formed a new group to elect Succorina on the hot seat.

Sources from the ruling group informed the media persons that Polita along with one councillor was planning to permit two fish meals plant at Cuncolim IDC, which was objected by the ruling group councillors and to keep IDC clean. We defeated Polita, one councillor informed on the condition of anonymity.

The newly elected chairperson Succorina informed the media persons that she will work hard along with the cooperation of all the councillors and local MLA to complete the incomplete works.

Meanwhile, it may be recalled that the Cuncolim Municipal Council had nine chairpersons in last five years.
