MARGAO: In response to the alarming increase in road accidents and fatalities, concerned citizens in Margao are urging the government to prioritise road safety measures over merely imposing fines for traffic violations. While acknowledging the importance of enforcing traffic rules, residents emphasise that cultivating discipline among commuters is paramount to curbing accidents effectively.

The surge in road accidents across the State in recent months has prompted citizens to call for urgent action from authorities. Despite the prevalence of daily accidents resulting in loss of life, there appears to be a lack of concerted efforts to address the root causes.

Citizens point out that both authorities and commuters are responsible for neglecting road safety measures. While traffic police and the Road Transport Department focus primarily on penalising rule violations, insufficient attention is paid to proactive measures aimed at preventing accidents.

Stephen Dias, a resident of Navelim, pointed out the absence of adequate traffic signage at various locations, contributing to confusion among drivers. He asserted the importance of clear signage and proper illumination, particularly on highways and major junctions, to enhance road safety.

Similarly, Prashant Naik from Verna lamented the lack of traffic police presence at accident-prone zones. “We have noticed malfunctioning traffic signals at bustling junctions, causing a mess. Good roads also mean there should be proper signboards  and sufficient streetlights as well. One can also see confusing sign boards,” he told O Heraldo.  Naik also raised concerns about poorly executed road construction projects, resulting in roads being elevated above footpaths and causing inconvenience to commuters.

Moreover, citizens stress the need for greater awareness  among motorists and pedestrians about road safety practices. Elvis Fernandes, a senior citizen from Salcete, said that drunken driving often contributes to accidents. Instead of solely relying on fines, Fernandes called for educational initiatives to promote responsible driving behaviour and curb underage and alcohol-impaired driving.
