PANJIM/MAPUSA: Suspected drug peddler F Ahmed has tested positive for COVID-19 while the team of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) that arrested him earlier this week has gone in isolation.
Ahmed, a driver with a Calangute resort was on September 1 arrested for his alleged involvement in supply of illegally imported curated narcotic drug marijuana (bud).
“Ahmed turned out to be COVID-19 positive. Since the team came in contact with the accused during his arrest and interrogation process, it has gone in isolation. The investigation will however not be affected,” a source said.
NCB had conducted an intensive operation against the illegal import of curated marijuana (bud), which is primarily sourced from USA and Canada and has huge market demand in Mumbai. It caught 3.5 kg of bud, valued at Rs 1.7 crore, from foreign post offices based on the specific inputs.
NCB operations in Mumbai had found the links with Goa followed by the arrest of Ahmed. The local is accused of supplying the bud to some prominent receiver at Bangalore, who has linkages with Page 3 celebrities.
With foreign post offices being used as a medium to transport narcotics, the NCB will investigate these zones across the State and coordinate with its counterparts in Mumbai and Delhi.
NCB has stated that one consignment - sourced from the US - and intended for Mumbai was seized in Delhi, while another quantity confiscated in Mumbai - sourced from Canada - was meant for delivery to Goa.
Meanwhile, JMFC Mapusa on Thursday granted conditional bail to F Ahmed, a driver with a Calangute resort who was arrested for his alleged involvement in supply of illegally imported curated narcotic drug marijuana (bud).
The accused was granted conditional bail against surety of Rs 10,000.
Sources informed that prior to producing before the court for remand, the accused was taken to North Goa District Hospital for medical examination where he tested positive for COVID.
The accused has been shifted to government-run COVID Care Centre.
