Distances itself from National leader’s desire to change traditions in Goa; Attacks Congress for demanding scrapping of highways

PANJIM: The BJP Goa Unit on Friday clarified that its senior national leader Subramanian Swamy’s remark that ‘Goa was on beef ban radar’ is his personal opinion.

“It is his personal opinion and his statement (on beef ban) is not the party stand,” BJP leader Dattaprasad Naik said.

His statement comes a day after Congress questioned BJP’s silence on the issue even as Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, BJP President Vinay Tendulkar and General Secretary Sadanand Tanawde on several occasions had refused to comment citing that the matter is sub-judice.

Swamy’s interview to a national channel earlier this month stating that ‘tradition in Goa has to be changed’ – clearly indicating implementing beef ban in near future – had stirred wide spread criticism across the State.

The BJP also slammed Congress for demanding scrapping of highways in a bid to save the liquor business. Naik said, “Why are they making irresponsible statements demanding scrapping of highways? We are getting Rs 10,000 crore for third Mandovi and new Zuari bridges. Why ask for something that cannot happen and misguide the people?”

He added, “Manohar Parrikar government is doing everything to save the livelihood of the affected traders. We are the first State to implement the revised Supreme Court (SC) order of 220 metres. This will save over 1000 outlets. There is also a move to denotify some State highways that would exempt more outlets from the purview of SC order.”

Naik, who is also President of All Goa Liquor Traders Association, criticized Congress for misusing the issue to take undue mileage.

Defending the State government’s delay in filing an appeal before the SC, Naik said that taking a step with proper legal advice fetches positive results.
