PANJIM: As the Goa government is yet to take a call on re-opening of schools, the State Center for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has curtailed the syllabus for Classes I to VIII by 30 per cent for the current academic year 2020-21 in view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In a circular issued to heads of all government and aided primary, middle and high schools, SCERT Director Nagraj Honnekeri, said there is no curtailment of any portion of grammar and language skills in all language subjects for the upper primary level. Also, the curtailed portion is not to be included in the term-end-examination.

Earlier in July, Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) had curtailed the syllabus of Class IX to XII to the extent of 28 per cent to 30 per cent in the major subjects for the ongoing academic term.

“As far as possible teacher may encourage students for self-study of the portions which are curtailed and to assist the students in solving difficulties,” the circular mentioned.

Honnekeri said that SCERT had constituted a Board of Studies in all subjects from Classes I to VIII and they were asked to identify the topics in the syllabus to curtail it to the extent of 30 per cent for the academic year.

“The curtailment of the syllabus is only for the limited purpose of examination only for the academic year 2020-21,” he said.

Educational institutions in the State are closed since mid-March in view of the pandemic. The schools resumed classes online mode from July.

Meanwhile, even as the Central government has permitted the re-opening of classes from October 15, the Goa government is yet to take a decision as the stakeholders have raised the red flag for the same.

The government is expected to allow “guidelines” classes for students of Class X and XII after the Diwali festival, which is scheduled on November 14.
