VASCO: Taxi owners from North and South Goa have urged the government not to allow rent a cab operators to venture into taxi business.

During a meeting, here, they also demanded immediate removal of Transport Director Nikhil Dessai and warned that if their demands are not met they will hold an agitation.

Taxi owners also urged Chief Minister and Transport minister to have a round table talk on the business, which is going out of their hands.

The other demands were that government should re-implement the taxi badge domicile certificate for 25 years, police clearance every six months, knowledge of Konkani and tourist places for taxi owners should be made compulsory.

Bappa Korgaonkar, a taxi owner claimed that the local taxi owners are self employed and their families are dependent on this business.

“If government is allowing private players to enter into taxi business then the question of livelihood of taxi owners will definitely arise," he opined.

Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco, who attended the meeting, informed that he has landed his support to the taxi owners because it is the matter of their livelihood.

He said that he is with the taxi owners and opined that government should hold talks and sort out the issue.

Speakers from various taxi associations such as the All Goa Yellow Black Taxi Association, Association of Tourist Taxi Owners and others also gave their views.
