Temporary closure of 3 level crossings connected to double tracking: SWR

Vasco: The South Western Railway (SWR)/ Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd on Tuesday confirmed that the temporary closure of the three level crossing roads in three villages of South Goa. The permission for the same had been sought from the South Goa Collector pertains to the double tracking project.

Speaking to the Herald a senior officer of Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RNVL), on the condition of anonymity informed that the permission they have sought for, from the South Goa Collector for the three day temporary closure of the three level crossing roads is pertaining to the doubling of railway track project. These are regarding the three level-crossing roads from the three villages at Nessai in Sao Jose De Areal, between Guridolim junction Chandor church and in Davolim village between Rawonfond and Davorlim, for five hours each on October 28, November 2 and on November 9.

Further, the RVNL officer stated that at the railway level crossing, there was only one track before but that presently, the double line work is in progress, so soon the double line will be through in the level crossing. When asked if this work is related to the doubling of railway track, the officer replied in the affirmative. 

When it was pointed out that there have been public agitations opposing the doubling of railway track in certain areas of Goa, the officer said that the doubling of railway track from Margao to Chandor and from Chandor to Sanvordem is in its completion stage, except for the level crossing road work, which is ongoing now. “Nobody is obstructing this work from Margao to Collem, people have voluntarily given their land for this project," the officer claimed.

Meanwhile when contacted Creson Antao, convener of Goencho Ekvott group said that if SWR tries to undertake doubling of railway track in Majorda and other areas, then there will a mega all-Goa level people's agitation to scrap the doubling of railway track project.

“People are now aware about the ill-effects of this double tracking and many people are joining this movement in villages. We had also given an ultimatum to the Chief Minister to scrap this double tracking project as we don’t want coal in Goa and such a destructive project" Antao added.
