Agrees BJP is short of numbers in the House due to illness of 3 MLAs

PANJIM: Days after Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo threatened to resign if the mining issue is not solved at the earliest, BJP State unit chief Vinay Tendulkar dared him to match his words with actions.

“This is not the first time Michael has made such a statement. Last December during the taxi agitation too he had made a similar threat that if taxi owners’ issues are not solved he would resign,” Tendulkar said.

He said that the issues of taxi owners are still pending and asked why lobo has not resigned. “He should keep up his words. Making statements is easy but keeping up to it is difficult,” Tendulkar stated.

Praising Lobo for his hard work and leadership, Tendulkar said, “If he works tirelessly for the party I am sure he could even become CM. He has those qualities,” Tendulkar said that neither he nor the party have a grudge against any leader.

Recalling his resignation in 2004 after a cap on cabinet ministers, he said, “When the party came calling I offered to resign on my own but today everyone wants to become minister and nobody is thinking of building the party.”

The BJP president admitted that his party is short of numbers and that is why they left the Speaker and Deputy Speaker untouched during the cabinet expansion. “Pramod Sawant or Michael Lobo cannot be elevated as there would be elections for their posts and right now we cannot afford that,” he said.

Tendulkar said three leaders are sick and cannot attend the Assembly if the elections to Speaker or Deputy Speaker are held this month. “We have the numbers but proving majority on the floor right now would be difficult due to three absentees,” he said.
