PANJIM, FEB 5
Twenty scholarships were disbursed to deserving students from schools and colleges across the State and one co-sponsorship to a seminary, by the Fr Chico Monteiro Memorial Trust.
At a function in the Lar de Estudantes, Altinho-Panjim, chief guest Cesar Menezes, chairman of Menezes Group of Companies, highlighted the significance of the event held every year to honour the memory of Fr Francisco Monteiro (1918-90), popularly known as ‘Padre Chico’.
Menezes said Padre Chico had all his life worked untiringly for the welfare of the youth.
Earlier, Fr Max Gonsalves, SFX, celebrated Mass, which was attended by relatives, friends and admirers, including former laristas or inmates of the students’ hostel, of which Fr Monteiro was the founder-director.
Speaking on the theme ‘Fr Chico Monteiro as a Visionary’, A X Esmeraldo Gomes, chairman of the Trust, praised him as a protagonist of several values that the world is in need of today, adding: “he not only preached but also practiced those values, on a stand-alone basis, selflessly and tirelessly.”
Selvio Fernandes, secretary of the Trust, read out the annual report, thanking several sponsors and philanthropists who have helped the Trust, and particularly appreciated the dedicated services put in by outgoing treasurer Olavo Paixão Pereira.
The function was compered by Gustavo Monteiro, while Oscar de Noronha proposed a vote of thanks.
