To deter dumping of garbage, Moira panchayat install CCTV cameras

MAPUSA: In a bid to deter miscreants from dumping garbage near the Moira bridge, the village panchayat has taken the initiative to install CCTV cameras to monitor the spot.

The piles of mixed waste being dumped along the Mapusa-Moira road, especially near the bridge one passes while entering the village, had become a concern for the locals as it was creating a bad image of the otherwise idyllic village.

Several times, groups of local youths had taken up drives to clean up the stretch and the panchayat had repeatedly removed the garbage as well, but the menace continued unchecked.

Since the area falls under the jurisdiction of the Bastora panchayat, the Moira panchayat had written a letter to the local body, asking them to install a CCTV camera to curb the menace. However, with no response from the Bastora panchayat, the panchas of Moira panchayat decided to bring the dark spot under CCTV surveillance themselves.

“This area comes under the Bastora panchayat, but since the road passes through our village, the menace brings us a bad name. With no response to our request from the Bastora panchayat, we decided to install the cameras ourselves. People dumping garbage here will be traced and fined,” said Moira Sarpanch Sagar Naik.
