All traffic cell staff and Home Guards manning traffic on the roads; Vehicle documents also being checked

PANJIM: The Traffic Cell of Goa Police has commenced a drive against traffic rule violations following a rise in accident deaths on Goan roads. On Wednesday traffic police booked almost 1358 cases of violations of Motor Vehicle rules, and on Thursday increased that to 1368 violations.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle said that all staff, including from the offices, have been posted on the roads. The cell has a strength of 600, of which over 450 are deployed only on roads to book violators of the traffic rules, he said.

Angle said that the cell has an additional support of 300 Home Guards who are also on the roads. “We will not spare a single person without helmet and not wearing seat belt while on the road,” Angle said.

“We had been only issuing challans for helmet and seat belts, but now I have instructed the staff to check everything, including documents of the vehicle found in violation,” he added.

Angle had some advice for motorists and said, “People should abide by the rules. Don’t be impatient and drive carefully. Those driving four wheelers and who tend to speed, stick a photo of your loved ones on the speedometer,” Angle said.

Angle said that all highways, major junctions and towns have been covered in the drive with traffic police in even internal village roads. “Our intention is not to harass anybody but due to the amount of accidents and deaths that have taken place. We are acting rigorously to save lives,” he said.

He said that in a few days the Traffic Cell will take up an extensive awareness drive through all kinds of media and medium.
