PANJIM: In a happy ending to the uncertainty as to whether the translocated Banyan tree would survive, at Campal ground as the tree has sprouted shoots. The banyan tree was uprooted from St Inez during the Smart City road works and translocated at the Campal new football ground twice. Fresh new leaves and roots were seen growing on the tree, giving it a new lease of life.

On Thursday, nature once again showed its resilience to human blunders, with tiny roots and leaves sprouting out from the age-old Banyan tree at Campal ground, Panjim.

It may be recalled that the age-old Banyan tree had its branches chopped and was uprooted in the intervening night of the April 5 and 6 and relocated from St Inez to the Campal ground due to Smart City works. The Smart City officials intended to cut the tree as it was posing a hindrance in their work but met with stiff resistance from environmentalists and forced the officials who opted to relocate to the vicinity of  the new football ground.

On April 8, the tree was once again relocated 25 meters further from the original spot. Workers were seen applying wet mud on the tree for its nourishment and better growth.

In the scorching summer heat, the entire tree was covered with a green cloth and was watered regularly. With utmost care by the authorities, nearly a month later the tree began showing signs of regrowth.
