Tributes galore for Damodar Mauzo after being awarded 57th Jnanpith Award

PANJIM: Tributes have been pouring in from all quarters and all walks of life to Konkani writer Damodar Mauzo for winning the 57th Jnanpith Award.

Be it contemporaries from Goa’s literary world, academicians, students, politicians, journalists, intellectuals and others, Goans have been praising Mauzo for this accomplishment and his rich contribution to literature.  Those who have worked with Mauzo were quick to list his published works and the awards he had won in the past and said this latest recognition ensures that history will remember Mauzo as one of India’s best all-time writers. There are many who even visited Mauzo’s house on Tuesday evening to congratulate him, calling the award a proud moment for Goa. 

“Congratulations to Goa's son, writer par excellence who propagated Konkani in literature, Shri Damodar Mauzo on being conferred with the prestigious Jnanpith Award,” said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on social media. 

“Proud moment for Goa. Damodar Mauzo was bestowed with the prestigious Jnanpith Award. An activist-writer whose works transcend boundaries and takes sensitivities of Goa to the world. Historic moment for the art, literature and society of Goa,” said Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude. 

The organisation Vishwa Konkani Kendra (World Konkani Centre) also praised Mauzo ‘for making Konkani people across the world proud by bringing 2nd Jnanpith for Konkani Literature continuing the legacy of Ravindra Kelekar’.

The All India Konkani Literary Association also issued a statement congratulating Mauzo. 

Noted writer Vivek Menezes hailed Mauzo’s achievement and pointed out that the Jnanpith Award is India’s highest literary honour.

Others like Nakash Borkar Ramesh Gahdi and concurred with Menezes that Mauzo getting the country’s oldest and highest literary award is much deserved and that it has put Goa and Konkani on world’s map. Saidutt Kamat said it is a proud day for all Konkani speaking people of the State.
