CANACONA: Chandrahas Velip and Arjun Gaonkar both from Barcem spotted a week-old calf crying in distress as it had got separated from its mother and was desperately searching for her when it got stranded on NH66 about a kilometre from Balli Government Hospital on Monday evening.

Fearing that the distressed and disturbed calf would certainly be hit by a vehicle plying on this busy highway, both the Barcem locals caught the calf with much difficulty and tried to pacify the bull calf while they called different agencies to come and rescue the calf.

They did not give up despite receiving lukewarm response from agencies including Cuncolim police station.

Unable to see the plight of the calf they tried contacting their friends on the mobile to enquire if anyone who could share an agency’s contact which could save the calf.

Fortunately, a friend shared the mobile number of an animal rescuer Goutham Bhagat of "The Tribe" a voluntary organisation dealing in rescuing reptiles in Canacona taluka.

Bhagat directed them to Dhyan Cow Foundation in Karnataka who directed the two youth to their counterparts in Fatorpa in Bali.

Within minutes the Foundation volunteers arrived with a vehicle equipped with an attachment to load heavy animals like cattle and a bottle of milk to feed the skinny calf who by that time had become weak with constant cries for her mother.

After about two hours of their relentless efforts, just as they were about to put the calf in the vehicle the mother of the calf came from nowhere to the delight of the calf and everyone around.

The joy was short-lived as the mother cow was herself weak and suffering from abnormal foot growth.

As the owner of the cow could be not identified the locals gave a oral consent and the calf and the mother were taken to an animal rescue center at Canacona for treatment.
