PONDA: Ponda Police, within 24 hours, arrested the two accused, one from Patradevi and another from Belgaum, who after attacking two Ponda cops with broken bottles were absconding after fleeing from the State.

The incident that shocked Pondaites had occurred on late Monday evening. The arrested are Krishna Latkar (29), a Nepali and Shubam Naik (24). An offence has been registered against them under Section 307 for attempt to murder and Section 353 read with (34) for assault on more than one government servant.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Nelson Albuquerque, speaking to Herald, clarified it was not a narcotic raid as reported by media.

“Both the accused were friends and were wanted in a theft case in Khadpaband-Ponda in March this year. The Ponda Police had kept a vigil on them since past five to six days and had gone to investigate on Monday after they were seen near one shop at Curti,” Albuquerque said.

Appreciating his team’s efforts, Albuquerque said they had spent sleepless night since the incident on Monday.

“The three teams went into different directions and finally arrested the one accused early Tuesday morning at Patradevi while the second was apprehended in Belgaum in the evening.

He said the team of Police Inspector Mohan Gaude ASI, PC and other police had gone to the shop at Curti for investigation after learning that Shubam Naik, a suspect in the House Breaking Theft (HBT) case reported in March this year, was present.

However, Shubam Naik fled from the spot on seeing the police and his colleague Krishna Latkar used a bottle and attacked the ASI and PC wherein ASI Jeetendra Gaude was seriously injured. “The ASI is undergoing treatment is now out of danger,” said DYSP Albuquerque. “Both the accused will be interrogated for the theft case along with attack on the cops,” he added.
