margao: The United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) lodged a complaint with the Water Resources Department (WRD) against the polluting units at Cuncolim Industrial Estate (CIE) through borewells, which affect the health and life of Cuncolim citizens.

Dr Jorson Fernandes, UGDP President, and Gleston Fernandes, a concerned Cuncolim citizen said Cuncolim people are affected due to regular bad stench emanating from the untreated effluents from the fish processing units at the CIE.

They said WRD had permitted just one borewell, whereas it has been found that another five or six additional borewells are detected dug by the Fish Processing Units by the Ground Penetration Radar, which has resulted in polluting the groundwater of the entire Cuncolim.

"The WRD is the custodian of our Groundwater and the aquifer, and the WRD is duty-bound to take prompt remedial action," they stressed. WRD has been served with a 14-day notice to resort to adequate as well as preventive measures and submit the action taken report, failing which the Cuncolim Citizens would have to resort to other mitigating measures.
