UK woman raped, robbed in Canacona
After the act accused runs away with three bags of the victim; Accused, a TN native arrested by Margao police within 12 hours of the crime; Accused is wanted for a Rs 30 lakh robbery in Pernem
CANACONA: Canacona woke up on Thursday to a gruesome act when a British woman while walking towards her rented room at Ovrem was raped by an unidentified man, who after committing the act ran away with her three bags containing Rs 20,000 in cash and other valuable items. The incident happened between 4.15am and 4.30am.
The accused Ramchandran Y from Tanjavor, Tamil Nadu was later arrested in Margao within 12-hours from committing the crime.
Police said the 48-year-old victim has been a regular visitor to Goa for the last ten years.
According to the police the victim had gone to Canacona railway station to board a train to proceed to North Goa. The train, ‘Netravati Express’ was running late by 45 minutes so she decided to cancel her onward journey and return home.
A CCTV camera installed at a shop about half a kilometre from the railway station captured her walking towards Palolem at 4.10am. A minute later a middle-aged man wearing jeans and a jacket with a hoodie appeared on the scene. At the same time a vehicle passed and to avoid being seen the accused turned his back to the road.
Another CCTV camera installed at a shop close to the scene of crime also captured the assailant walking briskly towards his victim.
The victim in her complaint to the police stated that the accused held her neck from behind and pushed her when she reached the junction near the BSNL telephone exchange. He took her a few metres away from the road and forcefully removed her garments and raped her. Later the accused took away her three bags which contained Rs 20,000 in cash, passport, ATM card and other documents.
The woman somehow gathered courage and knocked on the door of a friend who stayed in a nearby apartment and from there called the police control room.
Police said they have registered a case under Section 376 and 394 of IPC for rape and voluntarily causing hurt in commiting robbery against an unknown person.
A police dog was pressed into service which after sniffing the scene of the crime came on the road but after about 100 meters lost the track.
Police officials including SP South Arvind Gauns, SDPO Quepem Uttam Raut Desai, Canacona PI Rajendra Prabhudesai, Curchorem PI Ravi Desai, Sanguem PI Sagar Ekoskar, DySP Crime Branch Sammy Tavares along with his team of officers, Local Intelligence Bureau, Margao arrived at the scene of crime early morning. The investigators were later joined by a district forensic team.
On the basis of the description of the accused and CCTV footage police confirmed that the gruesome act was committed by a single person who followed the victim from Char Rasta on bare feet most of the time through adjoining fields to remain out of sight of the victim or other passersby.
Police found a pair of sandals and a shawl belonging to the victim from the site.
The victim was sent to GMC for medical examination which showed bruises and other injuries to her private parts confirming that she was sexually assaulted after being strangulated by the accused.
The effort of the team investigating the case bore fruits when they received a call from their Margao counterparts that they had arrested a person who matched the description shared by them.
A police team lead by Canacona PI later visited Margao police station and after doing the formalities brought the accused to Canacona.
Police provided the name of the accused as Ramchandran Y from Tanjavor, Tamil Nadu.
The police informed that they were on the lookout for Ramchandran and his accomplice for a robbery of Rs 30 lakh committed recently in Pernem.
One of the three mobile phones which was robbed was traced to Canacona.
Ramchandran and his accomplices after committing a robbery in Pernem were staying in a hotel at Margao. When Ramchandran reached near the hotel after committing the crime at 6.30am, the waiting police team swooped on him.
Police said the accused will be produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class on Friday for police remand.
Meanwhile, the public from Canacona condemned the heinous act and congratulated the Canacona police and other officers for detecting and arresting the accused within twelve hours of the incident.
