Medical Superintendent says the hospital treats patients via tenecteplase drug free of cost

PONDA: The Ponda Sub-District Hospital Medical Superintendent said the doctors at the hospital saved the lives of around 15 heart patients in the past two months under the STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction) Project.

Dr Vikas Kuvelkar said, “In the last couple of months under the STEMI scheme, we have taken utmost care of heart patients. We treated them via tenecteplase drug, which costs around Rs 25,000 free of cost and thus saved the lives of around 15 heart patients in the past two months. After thrombolysis, the condition of these patients gets stabilised and later we refer them to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim for further treatment. As the patient suffers heart attack, the first hour is the golden hour for treatment and a dose of tenecteplase can save his life.”

“Earlier in absence of such facility, many patients failed to get the timely treatment. Now, in cases of emergency, even the private hospitals refer heart patients to us as we provide this injection free of cost. The patients are free to take further treatment at GMC or private hospitals, Dr Kuvelkar said.

According to Dr Kuvelkar, in the past, the situation was different but now more patients are visiting the Sub District Hospital and availing improved medical facilities. We have filled the vacant posts of doctors and now there are around 18 of them providing round-the-clock service.  The hospital has benefited the economically backward class people from Ponda and other talukas with many of them availing the medical services.”

“Medical facilities including orthopaedic, delivery, ENT, surgeries, X rays, etc are provided at the hospital. There is special diabetic centre besides ayurvedic and other doctors providing 24-hour service. We refer only emergency cases such serious accident cases to GMC,” he said.
