Unique mangrove walk inaugurated

PANJIM: Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza inaugurated Phase I of the ‘Boardwalk over the Mangroves’ project.

“We always think that development is only building roads and bridges and we never look at the environment. Protecting nature is our main priority. This place has 14 species of mangroves which means that it is a complex type. It is also a good platform for students to learn,” D’Souza told reporters.

He added, “No mangrove was cut or harmed during the construction of this walkway and this is a good point. School students should come here and have a look and learn about the various species here.”

The project taken up by Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd in January 2018 at a cost of Rs 2.27 crore and is aimed at creating an open air museum. 

The walkway is 1125 square metres long and will show the breeding ground of fish and other wildlife. Along the walk are areas to sit and relax.  It will educate locals and tourists to the importance of mangroves and the many benefits they offer to society. It will go a long way in preservation of this important species. 

The walk is made of wood. The entire design respects the mangroves and ensures that the materials used do not harm the mangrove ecosystem.
