MARGAO: Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat has urged the Chief Minister to uphold the public sentiment in the opposition against the Vasco-Londa railway line double tracking.

Kamat said the public sentiments and views are always supreme in democracy. "The double tracking of the railway tracks from Vasco to Londa which is passing through various eco-sensitive villages and cutting across the width of Goa including the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park will severely damage the ecology and environment. The government must ensure that the environment of the State is protected at any cost. I urge the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant to be with the public on this issue," he said.

The Margao MLA was presented with a memorandum by Orville Dourado Rodrigues, Chairperson of Villagers Action Committee against doubling of the South Western railway tracks.

“The delegation of Villagers Action Committee mentioned various aspects of the danger to be caused to Goa including damage to village life, agriculture, animal husbandry, lives and health of residents etc, in its memorandum. But the most important aspect of this double-tracking would be damage to the environment and ecology. This project will severely affect the Western Ghats and the wildlife in the surrounding areas," Kamat stated.

He said the government needs to do a rethink on this project.

“I have always been with the people’s sentiments, emotions and views. I have assured the delegation of my full support on the issue,” Kamat said.

“I also, appeal the local MLAs to take up the matter with the Chief Minister in the interest of the State,” he added.
