VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal workers have threatened agitation over the long pending demands they have placed before the Council.

The workers union has set January 10 as the deadline for fulfilling their demands of pension and release of 7th Pay arrears failing to which they have threatened strike. The municipality, however, says that their demands have been met already.

Several MMC employees and retired employees with their union leader Keshav Prabhu met the Labour Commissioner in the presence of the chief officer. The retired workers of MMC alleged that they have not received arrears of the 7th Pay Commission and have also not received their salary as well as pension for 18 months. “We are requesting the MMC to release our arrears and salaries as it is our only source of livelihood,” a pensioner said.

Union leader Keshav Prabhu has warned the municipality that if it fails to fulfil the demands of the workers before January 10, the works would go on strike from the same day.

Meanwhile, the chief officer has said that all the demands of the workers of MMC have been met. “The MMC doles out salaries and allowances to its workers to the tune of Rs 1.15 crore every month,” he said. “We have fulfilled all the demands as per the agreement and settlement decided at the meeting. MMC has no major income like industry or any other source but still we manage to pay the dues regularly to workers,” MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said.
