VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson on Thursday claimed that once the fish vendors are shifted to temporary shed, work of the fish market complex will commence swiftly and will be completed within a one year period.

Chairperson Nandadeep Raut also revealed that two biodigesters will be set up to treat wet waste from the municipal jurisdiction.

While addressing the media persons, Raut informed that the wet garbage disposal is a long pending issue. The MMC has treated several tonnes of garbage in the last five months.

He explained that initially a biodigester was set up which didn’t functioned as per the expectations. Therefore, now the two new biodigesters of five tonnes capacity have been proposed and has been tendered. The tender has been sent to Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) where the technical screening will take place and after clearing, the financial tender will be floated. Estimated cost for these bio-digesters is Rs 5.3 crore which will have a five years free maintenance. The contractor will have to maintain the biodigesters for the five years. Once the biodigesters get operational the wet waste issue from MMC jurisdiction will be resolved.

Raut also mentioned that the work to erect temporary shed for the retail fish vendors near existing fish market shed is in progress.

He further informed that the temporary shed will be built as per the comfort and need of retail fish vendors. The GSUDA has already appointed a contractor for the fish market complex project, who visited the site and took the details.
