VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) agreed to issue a written assurance to the Vasco fish market vendors about their various conditions which they have put up before MMC for shifting into a new market shed.

MMC however, urged vendors to immediately shift in a new temporary shed after a brainstorming discussion held in a joint meeting on Friday afternoon in the Mormugao municipality.

Earlier on Friday morning the situation at the Vasco fish market became tense after a police force was deployed at the market asking the fisherwomen to shift in a new temporary shed. The head of the Vasco Fish Market Association Caridade Pereira said that their demands of stopping and removing illegal sale of fish at the roadside has to be fulfilled by the municipality first.

The situation became normal after police left the market site. 

Meanwhile, many politicians such as Congress leader Jose Raju Cabral, Trinamool Congress party Goa's leader met the fisherwomen and heard their grievances.

Cabral said that several vendors are coming to do business in Vasco market and learning about their issues he had come to express his solidarity with them. As per the demands of the fisherwomen the illegal vendors at the roadside should not be allowed, Cabral said. The written assurance to build the new fish market and to make proper arrangements in the new shed has to be done added the Congress leader.

Following this development a joint meeting with the fish vendors of Vasco and their leaders was called by MMC in presence of Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) officials later on Friday afternoon. A police force was present outside the MMC building to forbid any untoward incident.

During the meeting MMC Chief Officer Jayant Tari interacted with a 10-member delegation of the fish vendors and gave a patient hearing to their demands.

The fish vendors put forth that they want a written assurance that the roadside illegal selling of fish will not be allowed by MMC in the municipal area. Further an assurance that all the existing fish vendors will be shifted back to the new market and the market will be completed in the promised time frame was also demanded.

After listening to the fish vendors and their representatives Chief Officer Jayant Tari promised the vendors present that the MMC will fulfill their demands and also give them a written assurance.

The Chief Officer also said that an order will be issued that the sale of fish around the Vasco fish market and at roadside be totally stopped immediately. The same order will be sent to the local police to enforce it strictly in letter and in spirit, Tari said.
