VASCO: The citizens of Vasco are concerned over the constant spillage of coal on the roads which are transported by trucks from the coal handling plants at Mormugao Port Trust.

It is observed that coal particles are spilled constantly from the trucks while they transport coal consignments. The F L Gomes road from where the heavy vehicles are allowed is most exposed to the coal dust pollution due to the constant spillage of coal particles.

The people have raised serious concern over the spillage of coal particles and have demanded the Mormugao Municipal Council to stop the coal transportation through the city roads as it leads to health hazard.

The Municipal had resolved to ban the coal transportation through city roads, but till date it has not implemented the resolution. The MMC authorities have sent the resolution to the South Goa collector, but so far he has failed to give his consent for implementing the decision which was adopted unanimously by the municipal body.

When contacted, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik disclosed that he would seek a legal opinion on implementing the ban on coal transportation through city roads, as the resolution which was forwarded to the collector is pending for consent. “We will take a legal opinion so that coal transportation through the city is banned in total,” Naik added.
