Velim farmers list out grievances at public meet

MARGAO: Farmers of Velim village listed out the grievances they face at a public meeting that was held on Sunday.

Joyd Simoes, who is an agriculture graduate, explained that there are various technical difficulties that the farmers face due to which crops are getting destroyed and other farmers are getting discouraged to continue with farming.

The farmers gave examples of their problems such as the absence of adequate and proper fencing due to which cattle have been entering their fields and destroying their crops. Then there was the issue of saline water flowing into their fields and contaminating the same and questions were raised about the poor management of the sluice gates that had led to this issue. Thereafter, the lack of water supply to the fields was also discussed and the need to improve the irrigation network via water canals.
