Vendors encroaching  roads in Margao

MARGAO: While several fruit and vegetable vendors have encroached upon the main road leading to Margao city from Borda, Fatorda and Aquem obstructions and inviting traffic jams. 

People feel that the concerned authorities have to initiate action and check their licenses. 

The numbers of fruit and vegetable vendors carrying out their business by the roadside in Margao, Fatorda and the highways have increased multiple folds leading to heavy traffic congestion. People stop their vehicles in the middle of the road to purchase fruits and vegetables, blocking traffic, however, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and police are yet to initiate any action.

Vendors are seen sitting with fruits, vegetables and seasonal items like pineapple, groundnuts, spices, jackfruits, lime etc by the side of the road.

One can see these vendors on Borda-Margao road, road proceeding from Navelim towards Sirlim, Aquem road, Fatorda and Colva.

A retired school teacher said, “During the pandemic several vendors had set up temporary shops by the roadside along the highways, however, they continue with their businesses. With such a situation some main streets of Salcete, particularly highways, look ugly.”

A senior citizen said that the MMC should check their licenses. Another senior citizen said that the new market sopo vendors have encroached on municipal land and they are doing business but no action is initiated by Margo municipality. “Most of them have converted sopo premises into stalls and have encroached on municipal land due to which people can't move freely.
