PONDA: As the water level at Opa dips and fearing acute shortage at the height of summer, authorities in Ponda have begun pumping water from quarries into the Dudhsagar river on Wednesday to maintain its level.

WRD engineers were successful in installing three pumps at the Vedanta mines at Kodli and at Zarapkar and Parkar mines at Saton.

The move to pump water from quarries into the river comes after the dip in the water level of Opa Water Works which supplies the water to Ponda and Tiswadi talukas.

The water level at Opa had dipped in the last few days and Dharbandora WRD assistant engineer Sadanand Naik along with junior engineer Sagar Naik were looking to smoothen the water supply by installing pumps at the quarries.

Panch members from Saton-Dabal Bhola Gaonkar and Ramakant Gaonkar provided the WRD space to put up the pumps.

"The water from the quarries is being released into the river from four pumps. The water level at Opa will come to its regular level as 20 MLD everyday is released into the water," said assistant engineer Sadanand Naik.

"This will help in the regular supply of water to the households of Ponda and Tiswadi," said panch Ramakant.

Meanwhile, the water of Mhadei river at Ganjem was being pumped into Dudhsagar river and the water from quarries will reach Opa Water Works on Wednesday night.
