They met with Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo and demanded their vehicles be exempted

PANJIM: Deputy Speaker and BJP MLA Michael Lobo on Wednesday assured taxi owners to write to Union Minister for Transport Nitin Gadkari to exempt their vehicles from installation of speed governors, which has become mandatory as per Supreme Court guidelines.

Taxi owners on Wednesday met Lobo with a demand that their vehicles be exempted from installation of speed governors, failing which have threatened to come on street as mark of protest.

Speaking to reporters post meeting, Lobo said that he will write letter to Gadkari requesting to exempt the tourist taxis from Goa as special case from installation of speed governor. “I had raised the issue with State government, who sounds helpless in the case. Since the guidelines are issued by the Central government as per Supreme Court direction, we will have to approach Centre,” he said.

Lobo said that it not right on part of government to include tourist taxis since, in Goa, majority of people livelihood is dependent on it. “How far it is justified that I can drive at a speed of 150kms per hour and not tourist taxis?” he questioned.

Later speaking tourist taxi owner Laxman Korgaonkar said that government had assured them relief but nothing has happened so far. “We are been given assurances…we are waiting now for some immediate outcome,” he added.
