FIR for “attempt to murder”, causing grievous injury filed against policeman Sandip Parab and 3 other unnamed cops; within minutes, case is transferred to the Crime Branch as demand for the cops’ arrest reaches a crescendo in the corridors of the police station

PORVORIM: In a late-night drama, rightly buckling under tremendous pressure of over 200 protesting lawyers outside the police station, the Porvorim police have finally registered an FIR against head constable Sandip Parab, Vijay Sammati, his wife and two unknown police officers, under Sections 143, 147, 148, 307, 504, 506 ii, read with 149 of IPC.
On Thursday Adv Gajanand Sawant was purportedly assaulted by Porvorim police. The assault has caused widespread rage within the lawyer's community. Adv Sawant has suffered grievous injuries on his head. His family and advocates demanded action against the accused police Head Constable Sandip Parab.
Interestingly, although the ‘unknown police officers’ are attached to the Porvorim police station, their names have not been mentioned in the FIR.
The lawyers were also demanding that the unnamed police officers should be identified and arrested.
The lawyers also pointed out that the criminal case would not reach its logical conclusion if the Porvorim police handled it since the accused police personnel were posted at the same station. They then demanded that the matter be handed over to the Crime Branch for a free and fair investigation, and refused to move from the place unless a written undertaking was given to them.
Finally, just before midnight, the case was transferred to the crime branch. The transfer note stated “For the purpose of free and impartial investigation, SP North has directed to transfer the present crime to Crime Branch”
Police said that arrangements are made to transfer the case to the Crime Branch by Saturday noon.

Police Inspector of Porvorim Anant Gaonkar said on Friday that an offense had been registered against Adv Sawant for assault and abuse of his staff at the spot where the incident occurred, Shantinagar, Porvorim, ., "It is Adv Sawant who abused and slapped our officer first. We have booked him for that," said PI Gaonkar.
