MARGAO: Expressing concern about the traffic chaos that arises due to the Margao Fair, citizens of the commercial town on Friday requested the Margao Municipality to review the permission for the venue of the Feast Fair along the main highway, in the Municipal land near St. Francis Xavier Chapel at Madel, Margao.

In a letter to MMC Chief Officer Manuel Barreto, citizens have conveyed that their concern is on account of the digging of the National highway near the KTC Bus Stand, for the construction of sewerage network chambers.

“Due to this work, the two lanes on the eastern side of the highway have been blocked, from KFC to the southern end of the KTC Bus Stand, and the lane on the western side of the divider has been converted into a two way, thereby hampering the smooth flow of traffic,” said Savio Coutinho, convenor, Shadow Council for Margao. He stated that it is very important to consider the fact that even without the fair at the above-mentioned location, there is severe traffic congestion along this road, which will only result in further inconvenience to commuters when the fair begins. The sewerage department on one hand claims that their work cannot be suspended due to its urgent nature, in view of the River Sal pollution issue.

On the other hand, hordes of people and vehicles would be drawn to the fair, and create traffic snarls beyond the control of the police, he added.
