This follows the notification of the Goa compensation scheme for women/victims/survivors of sexual assault and other crimes
PANJIM: The State government has notified The Goa Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/other Crimes, 2018 for victims and their dependent(s) who suffer loss, injury owing to the offence committed on them. The Scheme will also provide rehabilitation to victims, who are in its urgent need.
As per the notification, a fund, namely, the Women Victims Compensation Fund will be created from which the amount of compensation, as decided by the State Legal Services Authority or District Legal Services Authority will be paid to women victim or her dependent(s).
The cabinet in December 2018 had approved the scheme, following directions from the Supreme Court, wherein compensation to victims will range from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, depending on the gravity of the crime.
As per the scheme, for loss of life a minimum of Rs five lakh and maximum Rs 10 lakh will be compensated to the dependents. The gang rape victim will be given relief between Rs five lakh to Rs ten lakh, while the rape victim will get between Rs four lakh to seven lakhs. In case of unnatural sexual assault the victim is liable of compensation between Rs four lakh to seven lakh and in case of 80 percent disability it is between Rs two lakh to Rs five lakh.
If there is any grievous physical injury or any mental injury requiring rehabilitation, then the compensation provided would be between Rs 1lakh-Rs 2 lakh.
In case of miscarriage as a result of assault or loss of fertility, then, the compensation would vary between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 3 lakh and in case of pregnancy on account of rape then it is Rs 3 lakh.
For the victims of acid attack, in case of disfigurement of face, the compensation varies from Rs seven lakh to Rs eight lakh, if injury is 50 percent and above then compensation would be between Rs 5lakh-8 lakh, injury less than 50 percent then Rs 3lakh-Rs 7 lakh and in case of injury less than 20 percent then it is between Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh.
The victims of burning, in case of disfigurement of face, the compensation varies from Rs seven lakh to Rs eight lakh, if injury is 50 percent and above then compensation would be between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 8 lakh, injury less than 50 percent then Rs 3lakh-Rs 7 lakh and in case of injury less than 20 percent then it is between Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.
