VASCO: The work to remove the remnants of German vessel (Ehrenfels and Brownfels(lying on the sea bed close to Khariwado  coast) would start during the months of February and March 2018.

According to Chairman of Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) I Jeyakumar, a Mumbai-based salvage company has been awarded the task to remove the remnants of German vessel that capsized during WW-II and a hindrance in the Vasco bay development plan.

“Though we have identified three such ship wrecks and had even floated tenders to salvage the wreck from the seabed, we would be taking up the removal of wrecks of the German vessel first and the other shipwrecks would be removal at a later stage,” he said.

“We would be spending about Rs 4.75 crores to remove the wrecks of German vessel, similarly to remove other two more shipwrecks we would spend around Rs 25 crores,” the MPT chairman said.

, adding that the wreckage would be removed before constructing the fishing harbour.

He further added that the removal of shipwrecks was part of the proposed development plan of Vasco Bay, for which a separate environmental clearance (EC) would be sought.

The wreckage of the German vessel is located 300 meters north of berth number 10-11 and is buried exactly where fishing harbour and liquid cargo jetty has been planned.

“The tender to remove the wreckage of the German vessel is ready but we have advised the party not to mobilize the machinery because we are awaiting the EC nod,” he said.

He also said the removal of shipwrecks would be beneficial for the smooth and obstruction-free movement of vessels, including barges and trawlers.
